Dominica Targets Energy Independence Amid Global Uncertainty

Dominica is moving to strengthen its economic resilience and accelerate its transition to renewable energy in response to rising global uncertainty linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced a series of measures to cushion the impact of higher fuel prices and disruptions in international trade, noting that the global situation is already putting pressure on household and business costs of living.
“Over the coming days and weeks, we’ll implement a series of targeted measures designed to cushion the impact on households and businesses,” Skerritt said while outlining the government’s response.
The measures include temporary reductions on import duties and taxes on essential goods, increased support for vulnerable households, and engagement with key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and the private sector to maintain economic stability.
The government also plans to work closely with the Dominica Electricity Services to manage the impact of rising fuel costs on electricity tariffs, while continuing to prioritise long-term energy solutions. “We will work closely with the Dominican Electricity Services to moderate the impact of rising fuel prices on electricity tariffs, and of course, geothermal is coming just at the opportune time,” Skerritt stated.
Central to the government’s strategy is a renewed push toward renewable energy, particularly geothermal development, which officials say will provide more stable and affordable electricity over time.
The Prime Minister stressed that the current global situation highlights the need for greater national self-reliance, particularly in energy and food production. “We must reduce our dependence on imported fuel and food… we will accelerate investment in renewable energy,” he said, adding that expanding local agriculture will also be a priority.
He emphasized that the government will continue to monitor developments closely and adjust its approach as needed, while maintaining essential services and prioritizing critical spending.
“I understand the anxiety that rising prices can bring… but I ask you to remain calm, to remain united, and to remain confident in our ability to weather the economic fallout,” Skerritt said.
Officials say the combined focus on renewable energy, fiscal management, and domestic production is intended to strengthen Dominica’s ability to withstand external shocks and maintain economic stability in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
