Morne Fraser
Morne Fraser is a volcanic peak rising within Saint David Parish, positioned above the village of Castle Bruce and adjacent to Morne La Source. It lies inside the Central Forest Reserve, where its steep slopes and fertile volcanic soils are shaped by andesite and basalt flows. The mountain is part of Dominica’s interior ridge system that feeds numerous rivers and ravines, including tributaries that flow into Ravine Senhouse.
Natural Environment and Biodiversity
The flanks of Morne Fraser are cloaked in moist rainforests supporting tree ferns, heliconia, gommier, and epiphytes. These forests provide breeding grounds for the Sisserou Parrot and Jaco Parrot, along with reptiles, frogs, and insect life. By linking high ridges to coastal valleys, the mountain contributes to Dominica’s ecosystems and biodiversity, sustaining pollinators, seed dispersers, and healthy forest corridors.
The Lower slopes host small-scale farming of root crops, bananas, and cacao, reflecting the role of Agriculture. Traditional paths link plots to water sources and village roads, while occasional hikers explore ridges for views, including those of the Atlantic Ocean and birdwatching.
