Morne La Source

Morne La Source rises in Saint David Parish above Castle Bruce, standing alongside Morne Fraser inside the Central Forest Reserve. Moist rainforests cloak its slopes, with tree ferns, bromeliads, orchids, and towering hardwoods forming habitat for upland wildlife, including the Sisserou Parrot and Jaco Parrot. As part of Dominica’s linked ecosystems and biodiversity, the mountain’s ridge-to-valley forests keep soils stable, shade streams, and sustain pollinators and seed dispersers across the eastern interior.

Hydrologically, the peak functions as a headwater shield for major rivers. Tributaries rise on its foothills, including those for the Charles Warner River and Richmond River. Feeder gullies, such as Ravine Cezar and Ravine Negres Marons, join the flows that enter the Madjini River. These networks supply springs and surface water to communities and farming plots around Castle Bruce and Sineku, with steady baseflow during dry spells.

Human use concentrates on lower contours where small plots of bananas, dasheen, cacao, and tree crops occur. The upper slopes remain largely forested, offering quiet, uncharted hiking routes on old estate lines and ridge paths with views toward the windward coast. The mountain sits just outside the legal boundaries of the Kalinago Territory, making it a natural reference point for watershed planning and cultural landscape mapping in the area.
