A new tour guide training programme has been launched in Dominica as part of ongoing efforts to improve service quality and strengthen the country’s tourism workforce.
The initiative, led by the Discover Dominica Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, the OECS, and the Dominica State College, brings together 30 participants for an intensive, fully funded training course running from April 14 to April 21, 2026.
The programme is supported by the Caribbean Development Bank under the ECSTEMS project and is designed to enhance professionalism within the sector while preparing participants for certification under the Nature Island Standards of Excellence framework.
Chief Executive Officer and Director of Tourism Marva Williams emphasized that the training is aligned with the evolving expectations of visitors and the need for consistent, high-quality service delivery across the island. “The programme ensures guides are confident and aligned with high-quality sector expectations,” she noted, highlighting the importance of structured training in maintaining competitiveness.
Participants are being trained in a range of practical areas, including environmental stewardship, cultural interpretation, safety protocols, and customer engagement. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with field-based learning, allowing trainees to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.
Officials say the programme also serves as a mandatory step for individuals seeking certification, ensuring that licensed guides meet national standards before operating within the industry.
The training comes at a time when Dominica continues to position itself as a premier eco-tourism destination, with increasing emphasis on authentic experiences and knowledgeable local guides.
By investing in human resource development, authorities aim to enhance visitor satisfaction, encourage repeat travel, and support sustainable growth across the tourism industry.
Graduates of the programme will be eligible to pursue formal certification, creating new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship while contributing to a more resilient and professional tourism sector in Dominica.
