The Government of Dominica has officially launched a major EC$70 million community resilience programme to strengthen climate adaptation, agriculture, and economic opportunities in some of the island’s most vulnerable communities.
The Dominica Community Resilience Enhancement Project (DOMCREP), is being funded through support from the Green Climate Fund and is expected to benefit hundreds of residents across eight communities.
Communities identified under the project include Colihaut, Coulibistrie, Campbell, Pichelin, Bagatelle, Petite Savanne, San Sauveur and Good Hope.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said more than half of the project funding will go directly toward agriculture and agro-processing initiatives, with a particular emphasis on supporting women and vulnerable households.
“And so this project is a 70 million EC dollar project, investments that will go directly to the people in those communities,” Skerrit stated during the launch ceremony.
“More than 50 percent of that $70 million will go towards agriculture and agri-processing and ensuring that women in particular are highlighted in a dramatic way in the access to the opportunities,” he added.
Government officials say the programme will also focus on climate adaptation measures, livelihood development, community infrastructure improvements, and strengthening local resilience against storms, flooding and other climate-related threats.
“You have to avail yourselves of the opportunities. You have to inform yourselves when there are community meetings,” the prime minister said while encouraging residents to assist neighbours who may also qualify for support under the programme.
Officials say the project is designed not only to improve disaster resilience but also to create longer-term economic opportunities through sustainable agriculture, small-business support, and community-based development activities.
