Political campaigning continues to intensify in the Roseau North constituency as residents await the official announcement of the by-election date, which is constitutionally required to be held by September following the vacancy in the parliamentary seat.
Although the Electoral Office has not yet announced polling day, both the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP) have accelerated their campaigns, with candidates engaging residents through community meetings, house visits and constituency outreach activities.
The DLP has selected Ashma McDougall as its candidate. During recent campaign engagements, McDougall said her platform has been shaped through conversations with residents, emphasising that community development initiatives should be designed in partnership with the people they are intended to serve.
Among her priorities are the rehabilitation of community centres, the creation of more opportunities for youth development, the expansion of skills training programmes, and the strengthening of community engagement. She has argued that revitalized community facilities can provide safe and welcoming spaces for young people while encouraging greater social cohesion.
Meanwhile, UWP candidate Danny Lugay says his campaign is progressing well and that he remains confident of securing victory. Lugay said he has been conducting meetings throughout the constituency and believes his campaign strategy is resonating with voters.
“I know what I have to do to win, and I’m doing my strategic strikes to win this seat,” Lugay said, adding that while he is confident, he is “not complacent.”
The Roseau North seat became vacant earlier this year, triggering the requirement for a by-election. Under the Constitution, the election must be held within the prescribed period, placing September as the latest timeframe for the poll. However, the authority to announce the official election date rests with the President acting on the advice of the Prime Minister.
With no official polling date yet confirmed, political activity is expected to continue increasing in the weeks ahead as both major parties seek to strengthen support across the constituency. Residents are expected to hear further policy proposals and campaign commitments as they await the formal announcement that will begin the final phase of the Roseau North by-election campaign.
