Cuban Ambassador Praises Dominica’s Support Over Three Decades

Dominica and Cuba are marking 30 years of diplomatic relations, with Cuban Ambassador to Dominica Miguel Manuel Fraga Gonzalez describing the relationship between the two countries as one built on solidarity, mutual respect, and consistent international support.
Speaking during a special DBS programme commemorating the anniversary, Ambassador Fraga praised Dominica for what he described as its longstanding and principled support for Cuba within regional and international forums, particularly at the United Nations General Assembly.
“We are grateful for the support of Dominica, the solidarity of Dominica, in every international space,” Fraga stated. “They have been brave and they have been honest in supporting the Cuban people.”
The ambassador specifically highlighted Dominica’s repeated support for resolutions calling for an end to the decades-old United States trade embargo against Cuba, an issue that continues to dominate Cuban foreign policy discussions internationally.
“We see every year in the United Nations how the majority of the countries of the world support a resolution asking for the end of the sanctions,” Fraga said. “It’s amazing to see countries like Dominica speak there with dignity and pride.”
Fraga also addressed Cuba’s ongoing economic and fuel difficulties, arguing that international sanctions continue to affect the island’s ability to access oil, food, medicine, and other essential resources.
“If you really want to help the Cuban people, remove the sanctions,” he stated while discussing recent international assistance proposals.
Despite the challenges, Fraga pointed to Cuba’s investments in renewable energy, including more than 1,000 megawatts of solar energy projects installed over the past year.
Over the past three decades, Cuba and Dominica have maintained close cooperation in healthcare, education, disaster response, and technical assistance, with Cuban doctors, nurses, teachers, and specialists contributing to several sectors in Dominica.
