Sobers John Esprit

Sobers John Esprit is one of the most influential cultural architects in the modern history of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Often described as a Development Specialist and Cultural Administrator, he has spent over 50 years at the intersection of the arts, tourism, and regional policy.

Esprit remains a vital advisor to the state, currently serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and a leading voice on the economic potential of the Orange Economy (creative industries) in the Eastern Caribbean.

Early Cultural Activism and Literacy

Sobers Esprit’s journey began not in an office, but in the grassroots cultural movements of the late 1970s and 80s. He was a central figure in the Dominica Writers Guild, where he advocated for the use of literature and poetry as tools for national identity.

During this era, he was deeply involved in the island’s burgeoning social movements, collaborating with figures like the late Loftus Emmanuel to organize reggae concerts and African Liberation Day activities. These early years established his philosophy that culture is not just entertainment, but a social fabric that binds a post-colonial nation together.

The OECS and Regional Creative Leadership

Esprit’s influence expanded beyond Dominica’s shores when he joined the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) as the Business Development Officer for Creative Industries.

In this role, he pioneered the Music Talk series across the Caribbean (including Montserrat, St. Kitts, and St. Vincent), focusing on:

• Digital Strategy: Teaching local artists how to navigate the digital/knowledge-based economy.
• Intellectual Property: Advocating for copyright protection to ensure artists are fairly compensated.
• Regional Integration: Pushing for a “Regional Carnival Calendar” to coordinate tourism and reduce intra-regional travel costs for artists.

Architect of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF)

Perhaps his most visible legacy is his role in the creation of the World Creole Music Festival.

• 1997 Founding: The WCMF was conceptualized by an NDC sub-committee (including Sobers Esprit, McCarthy Marie, and Stanley Georges) to boost tourism during the slow month of October. Eddie Toulon was appointed as the first Executive Director of the Dominica Festivals Commission (DFC) to execute this vision, serving as the lead architect for the festival’s first four editions.
• Evolution: He served as the Secretary of the initial Cadence-Zouk Festival Committee and later as the Vice Chairman of the Dominica Festivals Committee.
• The 25th Milestone: In late 2025, he was a lead coordinator for the 25th Anniversary edition of WCMF, which he promoted extensively in Guadeloupe and Martinique to strengthen the “Creole Link” between the French and English-speaking Caribbean.

National Honors and Recent Recognition

In recognition of his half-century of service to the nation’s soul, Sobers Esprit was honoured with the Meritorious Service Award for Culture during Dominica’s 45th Independence celebrations in November 2023. This award, presented by the President of Dominica, is one of the island’s highest honours, reserved for those who have made exceptionally valuable contributions to the state.

Current Advocacy (2025–2026)

In his most recent public addresses, Esprit has pivoted toward the future of Dominica’s infrastructure. He is currently a vocal proponent of linking the upcoming International Airport Project (scheduled for 2027) with two specific sectors:

1. Festival Tourism: Moving beyond WCMF to create a year-round “lifestyle experience” for visitors.
2. Sports Tourism: Advocating for the island to leverage its natural terrain for regional and international athletic competitions.
