King of Cadence-lypso

While many artists shaped the sound of Dominica, the title of King of Cadence-lypso is most often bestowed upon the legendary Jeff Joseph (also known as Jeff Jo). He earned this moniker for his magnetic stage presence and his role as a global ambassador for the genre.

However, the history of the Kingship is nuanced, as different figures are credited with creating, popularising, and preserving the music in modern times.

The Icons of the Throne

The King title is frequently shared or debated among three major entities, each representing a different facet of the music’s dominance:

  • Jeff Joseph (The Global King): As the lead singer of Grammacks, he is credited with taking Cadence-lypso to the international stage. His energy and versatility earned him the title from the French-Antillean media (France-Antilles), who declared him the King of Kadans-lypso who made us dance for 40 years.
  • The Midnight Groovers (The Local Kings): In Dominica, the Midnight Groovers (led by Marcel “Co” Mark and Phillip “Chubby” Mark) are often dubbed the “Kings of Cadence.” They are celebrated for keeping the rootsy, soulful 1970s sound alive, focusing on social commentary and deep Creole rhythms that resonate specifically with the local Dominican population.
  • Gordon Henderson (The Creator): While rarely called King, Henderson is the undisputed Father or Creator of the genre. As the leader of Exile One, he coined the term Cadence-lypso in Paris in 1974. He provided the intellectual and entrepreneurial blueprint for the music that the Kings would later perform.

The Crown of Influence

The impact of these Kings extended far beyond Dominica’s shores, laying the groundwork for the Caribbean’s most popular modern genres.

The Living Legacy

The Kingship of Cadence-lypso is not just a title of the past. In recent years, cultural advocates like Leroy “Wadix” Charles have spearheaded Cadence-lypso Month (July) to ensure the legacy of these icons is recognised by younger generations. They are viewed as living ancestors whose work transformed Dominica from a colony into a culturally independent nation.
