Candia Carette-George
Candia Carette-George serves as the Chief Magistrate of Dominica, crowned in her acting role in December 2013 by the Public Service Commission, under the stewardship of the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the Government of Dominica. Since then, she has led the Magistrate’s Court in both civil and criminal proceedings, distinguishing herself through firm and fair jurisprudence.
Candia Carette-George’s Legal Career & Judicial Leadership
Born and raised in Dominica, Candia Carette-George pursued a legal career that culminated in her appointment to the judiciary. She is recognized for her dedication and administrative competence in court management and legal proceedings across the Magistrate’s Court system.
As a forward-thinking judicial leader, Chief Magistrate Carette-George pioneered the introduction of Night Court sessions in 2025, operating from 1 pm to 9 pm four afternoons a week, to address chronic case backlogs and increase accessibility. These sessions were launched in partnership with the Ministry of National Security and Legal Affairs and the Dominica Bar Association, marking a strategic shift toward responsive justice administration.
She has presided over notable cases, including overturning a no-case submission filed by defendants in a high-profile double murder trial, finding sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. Her judgments frequently undergo High Court review, underscoring their legal significance and procedural fairness.
