Skerrit Urges Business Readiness as Airport Project Employs 400+

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has urged Dominicans to begin forming companies and acquiring relevant skills as construction of the international airport project advances, noting that the project is already providing jobs and will create wider economic opportunities once completed.

Speaking recently, the Prime Minister said more than 400 Dominicans are currently employed on the international airport project, reflecting strong local participation during the construction phase. He described workforce involvement as an important step toward ensuring that the project’s benefits are shared nationally.

Skerrit encouraged citizens to think ahead of the airport’s completion by establishing businesses that can support future operations. He pointed to opportunities in areas such as ground handling, logistics, maintenance, transportation, catering, security, and other airport-related services that will be required once commercial flights begin. According to the Prime Minister, forming companies early allows individuals and groups to position themselves for contracts and partnerships when the airport becomes operational. He stressed that preparation, compliance, and organisation will be key for local businesses seeking to participate in the next phase of economic activity linked to the airport.

The government has repeatedly stated that the airport is expected to be a major driver of employment and investment, supporting tourism growth and wider development.

Skerrit said the focus remains on ensuring Dominicans are ready to take advantage of those opportunities rather than being left on the sidelines. He added that the current employment figures demonstrate the scale of impact the project is already having and signalled that additional jobs will emerge as construction progresses and as supporting industries expand.
