Skerrit Reiterates Confidence in Electoral Reform Progress
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit reaffirmed his government’s commitment to electoral reform during a press conference held earlier today (June 23, 2025), declaring that the process is on track and will be completed ahead of the next general election.
Responding to public concerns and media questions, Skerrit noted that the proposed legislation is currently before Parliament and that significant progress has already been made. “I am confident we will complete the electoral reform process before the next general election. This is not something we are treating lightly,” he said. The Prime Minister emphasised that the bill contains clear guidelines for voter identification, a clean voter list, and the use of national ID cards, measures he described as key to ensuring free and fair elections.
Skerrit also addressed critics who have questioned the pace of reform, asserting that the process has been methodical to ensure legal soundness and national consensus. He stressed that the draft legislation benefited from consultations and expert input, including recommendations from international partners. “We have not been sitting idly. We have been doing the work, consulting with legal minds, and engaging stakeholders,” Skerrit added.
The Prime Minister rejected suggestions that electoral reform was being delayed for political advantage. He stated that his administration welcomes transparency and will continue to share updates as the bill progresses through the necessary stages in Parliament.
