The Government of Dominica has approved an initial humanitarian contribution of US$500,000 to assist Venezuela’s disaster response following the devastating earthquakes that struck the South American nation in late June.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced the financial commitment during his monthly press conference, expressing Dominica’s sympathy and solidarity with the Government and people of Venezuela as they begin the long process of recovery from one of the country’s most destructive natural disasters in recent years.
“I wish once again to express the sympathy and solidarity of the Government and people of Dominica to the Government and people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that resulted in loss of life, injuries and widespread destruction,” the Prime Minister said.
According to the Prime Minister, Venezuela has long been an important regional partner and friend of Dominica, making it essential for the country to respond during a time of humanitarian need.
He said the earthquakes serve as a reminder of the importance of regional solidarity, particularly among countries that are themselves vulnerable to natural disasters.
“These tragic events remind us of the importance of solidarity and cooperation in times of crisis,” Skerrit stated. “There is no doubt this task is a huge one for the Government and people of Venezuela.“
The Prime Minister confirmed that Cabinet has approved an initial donation of US$500,000, which will be directed toward Venezuela’s emergency disaster response and early recovery efforts.
“The Government of Dominica has approved an initial donation to the Venezuelan Government and people of US$500,000 that will go towards their disaster response,” he announced.
The earthquakes, which struck Venezuela on June 24, caused widespread destruction across affected communities, resulting in significant loss of life, thousands of injuries and extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure and essential services. The scale of the disaster has prompted relief efforts from governments and international partners across the region.
Dominica has frequently participated in regional humanitarian assistance efforts and has also benefited from international support following major disasters, including Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and Hurricane Maria in 2017. Government officials have often emphasised that regional cooperation and mutual assistance remain vital principles in responding to emergencies throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
The Prime Minister said Dominica’s contribution reflects the country’s commitment to standing alongside its neighbours during times of hardship and reaffirmed the government’s support for the Venezuelan people as recovery and reconstruction efforts continue.
