No Date Set for General Elections, Skerrit Dismisses Speculation

Prime MinisterRoosevelt Skerrit has firmly put to rest mounting speculation that general elections in Dominica are imminent. Addressing the issue during today’s (June 23rd) press conference, Skerrit stated clearly that no date has been set for the next polls and called on citizens and political actors alike to remain focused on national development priorities.

I want to make it abundantly clear, there is no set date for general elections,” the Prime Minister said. “These rumours are distractions. We have a country to build, institutions to strengthen, and reforms to complete.

His statement comes amid growing chatter both on social media and in some opposition circles that early elections may be called, particularly with Dominica recently marking the 70th anniversary of adult suffrage and signs of increased political mobilization.

While he acknowledged that every ruling party in a democracy must eventually return to the electorate, Skerrit emphasized that his administration is currently focused on delivering results, including through the electoral reform process now underway. He reiterated that the reform effort, led by Sir Dennis Byron, is expected to conclude before the next election is even considered.

Political observers have noted recent government activities such as constituency visits, national consultations, and party mobilization efforts. However, Skerrit dismissed the idea that these actions point to any hidden timeline. “The work of government does not stop between elections,” he added. “We serve the people daily, not only during campaigns.

With Dominica’s last general election held in December 2022, the next constitutional deadline for elections would fall by late 2027. While the Prime Minister reserves the legal authority to call early elections, his current posture suggests no immediate plans to do so.

Skerrit’s comments appear designed to defuse speculation and restore public focus on ongoing governance issues, including water security, education improvements, and healthcare delivery. For now, any discussions of a national poll remain firmly in the realm of speculation, not planning.
