Miriam Blanchard Resigns as Roseau North MP

Speaker of the House of Assembly Joseph Isaac has announced the resignation of the parliamentary representative for Roseau North, Miriam Blanchard, bringing an end to her tenure as a member of Dominica’s Parliament and creating a vacancy that will require a by-election within the period prescribed by the Constitution.

According to the Speaker, a letter dated June 9, 2026, and received on June 12, formally communicated Blanchard’s decision to resign from her parliamentary seat on medical grounds.

Under Section 119 of the Constitution, the resignation took effect immediately upon receipt of the correspondence by the Speaker.

The announcement prompted reactions across the political landscape, with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit issuing a statement expressing gratitude for Blanchard’s years of public service. He described her as a committed public servant who answered the call to national duty and played an important role in government during periods of significant national development and reconstruction.

Blanchard served in several ministerial portfolios over the years and was involved in major government initiatives, including infrastructure development, economic planning and public sector matters.

The Prime Minister noted that despite personal health challenges, she continued to carry out her responsibilities and remained committed to serving both her constituents and the wider Dominican public. Residents of Roseau North offered mixed reactions following news of the resignation.

While some expressed surprise at the announcement, others said they were aware of Blanchard’s health challenges and supported her decision to prioritise her well-being. Several residents also voiced hopes that the constituency’s next representative would maintain a strong presence in the community and remain accessible.

The Constitution requires a by-election to fill the vacancy, and government officials have indicated that the process will proceed within the timeframe established by law. In the meantime, the Prime Minister assured residents that the affairs of the Roseau North constituency would continue without interruption as arrangements are made for the election of a new parliamentary representative.
