Heavy Weather Disrupts Communities from Marigot to Castle Bruce

A recent trough system has caused extensive damage across several communities in Dominica’s east and northeast, with roads, homes, and small businesses affected by heavy rainfall and resulting landslides.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who visited impacted areas including Marigot, Castle Bruce, and sections of the Kalinago Territory, described the damage as significant, noting that multiple communities experienced disruptions to transportation and daily life.

The immediate priority, according to the Prime Minister, is restoring access to affected areas. Crews have been mobilized to clear debris and reopen roads, with heavy equipment deployed to address blocked routes and reconnect communities.

The first objective of the government is to allow for vehicular access to every community,” Skerrit stated, emphasizing the urgency of restoring movement across the island.

Preliminary assessments indicate that several homes have been compromised, with some families facing relocation due to unsafe conditions. Authorities are also evaluating the impact on small businesses and the broader social effects on displaced residents.

The government has begun providing immediate assistance to affected households, particularly those who have lost essential belongings, including food, clothing, and household items. Support efforts are being coordinated alongside ongoing assessments to determine longer-term recovery needs.

Skerrit pointed to the financial burden associated with such events, citing past weather events in which millions of dollars were required to clear landslides and restore infrastructure. Early indications suggest that current damage may entail costs similar to or greater than those incurred in previous disasters, given the extent of the affected areas.

Emergency response teams continue to work across impacted communities, focusing on restoring access, stabilizing vulnerable locations, and supporting residents as recovery efforts progress.
