Government Exploring Port of Entry Status for Marigot

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the Marigot Port could eventually become an official port of entry, a move he believes would create major economic opportunities for communities in Dominica’s northeast.

The proposal, though still at a developmental stage, is being viewed as part of a wider transformation already underway in the region alongside the construction of the international airport project and surrounding infrastructure works.

Speaking on the potential impact, Skerrit suggested that the benefits would not be limited to Marigot alone, but could extend across several communities in the northeast.

All the way back from Calibishie all the way to Petite Soufriere, it’s going to be a real positive impact,” the Prime Minister stated.

An official port of entry would allow vessels arriving from outside Dominica to process customs and immigration formalities directly at Marigot, creating new opportunities for marine transport, tourism activity, cargo movement, and business expansion in the area.

The idea comes as the government continues to focus attention on the northeast as a major growth zone. Officials have repeatedly pointed to the airport development as a project expected to shift economic opportunities further outside the capital and into surrounding communities.

Residents and businesses in the region have long argued that improved infrastructure and direct economic access are necessary to stimulate investment and reduce the concentration of activity around Roseau.

While no timeline has yet been announced for the port proposal, the Prime Minister’s comments signal that government is considering additional ways to build out transportation and trade networks linked to the airport development.

If implemented, Marigot would join Douglas-Charles Airport and the Woodbridge Bay Deep Water Harbour among the country’s official entry points for international traffic and commerce.
