Dominica’s government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening environmental protection while pursuing sustainable economic development, with Environment Minister Cozier Frederick stressing that the country’s natural resources remain central to its future prosperity.
Speaking during a national observance on the theme Forests and Economies, the minister emphasised that environmental stewardship and economic growth must work together rather than compete. He explained that protecting forests and ecosystems can generate income while preserving the island’s biodiversity.
“We cannot separate prosperity from conservation. The future we seek must be one where economic growth and environmental protection work hand in hand.”
Frederick noted that sustainable forest management offers opportunities for economic development through sectors such as eco-tourism, agroforestry, and nature-based industries. These approaches, he said, can strengthen rural communities while ensuring that Dominica’s natural heritage remains protected.
“Sustainable forests can generate income while preserving biodiversity. Agroforestry can strengthen food security while empowering rural communities.”
The minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to support green industries and environmentally responsible development. He said these initiatives form part of a broader strategy aimed at building national resilience while protecting the island’s ecosystems.
“We remain committed to strengthening forest protection, advancing green industries and ensuring that our development path is one that respects and protects our natural capital.”
Frederick stressed that environmental sustainability cannot be achieved through government policy alone. He urged citizens, businesses, and community groups to play an active role by adopting practices that support environmental protection.
He encouraged Dominicans to plant more trees, reduce waste, and support locally produced goods that respect environmental standards. According to the minister, these collective actions will help ensure that economic progress does not come at the expense of the country’s environment.
The minister also addressed young people directly, encouraging them to help shape the island’s future green economy through innovation and creativity.
He said that by embracing sustainable practices today, Dominica can secure a development path that balances economic opportunity with long-term environmental protection.
