Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation Acquires Two Trucks from Europe

The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) has added two compactor trucks to its fleet, aiming to improve waste collection efficiency across the island. The vehicles, sourced from Europe, arrived this month and are already in service.

General Manager Florian Mitchell confirmed the acquisition during a recent update, noting that while the trucks are used, they will serve as a timely boost to operations until brand-new units arrive later in the year. “They are used, but we have to purchase what we can get at the moment until our new trucks arrive,” he said.

Mitchell explained that the corporation has faced ongoing challenges with its vehicle fleet due to mechanical breakdowns and the high cost of repairs. The two additional trucks will help stabilize collection schedules, particularly in areas that have experienced delays. “The addition of these trucks will assist us in improving our collection service and reduce downtime,” he stated.

He further indicated that the corporation expects three new compactor trucks by October, purchased under government funding arrangements. These new units are expected to significantly enhance the reliability of waste management services.

Mitchell reiterated that while the acquisition of the European trucks is a temporary measure, it is a necessary step in meeting the immediate needs of communities. “We have to make do with what is available to ensure that waste collection is not severely impacted,” he said.

The DSWMC continues to urge the public to cooperate with collection schedules and practice proper waste disposal as it works to improve service delivery in the coming months.
