Dominica has joined conservation trust funds, regional organisations and technical experts from across the Caribbean for discussions aimed at strengthening long-term financing for biodiversity protection, climate resilience and community-led environmental projects.
The three-day workshop was held from July 14 to 16 under the theme “Strengthening Systems, Strategy, and Sustainability in Caribbean Sustainable Finance Architecture.”
Participants used the meeting to share knowledge, examine existing conservation finance systems and discuss strategies for improving regional cooperation. The talks placed particular attention on creating stronger and more reliable financing mechanisms for environmental work throughout the Caribbean.
The workshop also examined how conservation funding can support climate resilience and environmental projects designed and implemented at the community level. Organisers are seeking to develop systems that can provide continued support for these initiatives instead of relying only on short-term project funding.
Representatives of national conservation trust funds from Dominica, The Bahamas, Guyana, Haiti, St. Kitts and Nevis, the Dominican Republic, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Suriname, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines participated. Regional partners, technical experts and other environmental stakeholders also attended.
The workshop was convened through the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund’s Conservation Finance Programme. It received support through the Caribbean Regional Architecture for Biodiversity and Caribbean Organisations for a Resilient Environment projects.
Both initiatives are intended to strengthen the Caribbean’s sustainable finance structure and improve the region’s ability to fund biodiversity conservation over the long term.
Dominica’s participation comes as Caribbean countries continue searching for dependable sources of financing to protect natural resources, restore ecosystems and help communities respond to climate-related threats.
