A request from the United States government involving third-country nationals is now under review by authorities in Dominica, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who says no final decision has yet been made.
The disclosure came during a recent press conference, where Skerrit confirmed that the U.S. submitted a draft list of individuals it would like Dominica to consider accepting temporarily. The Prime Minister said the proposal is still being examined, and additional information has already been requested from American officials before any determination is made.
“I just saw a list a couple of days ago that the U.S. has sent to us for consideration,” Skerrit explained, adding that the government has not formally approved any arrangement at this stage.
The issue appears to involve migrants or displaced persons from other countries who may require temporary accommodation or transit arrangements. While few operational details have been made public, the comments sparked immediate discussion locally, especially given the wider international debate over migration and border policy.
Rather than approaching the issue strictly from a diplomatic angle, Skerrit framed the matter as one involving humanitarian responsibility. He argued that small countries should not lose their sense of compassion when dealing with people facing hardship or uncertainty.
“We have to have a certain humanism to us,” the Prime Minister said. “And if Dominica can house some people, albeit temporarily, who are in distress, I believe it’s a noble thing for us to do.”
He also suggested that some individuals may eventually wish to remain in Dominica permanently, saying the country should at least be willing to examine those possibilities carefully.
The government has not released the number of persons included on the draft list, nor has it disclosed which countries the individuals originate from. Officials also have not indicated where any temporary housing would take place if an agreement is eventually reached.
For now, the administration says discussions remain ongoing and no commitments have been finalized. Skerrit emphasized that the matter will require broader national consideration before any final position is adopted.
“But I leave it to the country to decide,” he stated.
