A road improvement project in Cochrane is nearing completion as the community prepares for the return of its Rabbit Festival after a nine-year absence.
Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Valley Constituency, Dr. Irving McIntyre, said the road, which runs between the Cochrane Housing Scheme and the community playing field, had become a priority because of the difficulties residents experienced during periods of heavy rainfall.
McIntyre explained that the unpaved surface often became muddy and difficult to traverse, creating problems for residents, children and other users of the area.
“It’s a road that the government, me as the parl rep, I promised that we would do because in the heavy rains it can be very difficult for the residents of this area to traverse,” McIntyre said.
He added that the project represented the fulfilment of a commitment made to residents and thanked the community for its patience while the work was being carried out.
The Roseau Valley MP also praised the contractor for working quickly and remaining on schedule. He said completing the road was particularly important ahead of the Rabbit Festival, which is returning to Cochrane for the first time since 2017.
The festival is expected to feature local food, drinks, music and family activities. McIntyre described the event as part of Dominica’s tourism calendar and invited residents from across the island to attend.
Residents have welcomed the road improvement, saying it will make travel through the area easier and safer.
One resident recalled that the road previously contained puddles and deep holes, leaving children with wet or damaged shoes when travelling through the area. She expressed gratitude to McIntyre and the Government of Dominica for completing the project.
Another resident said the road works had also created short-term employment for eight young men from the community.
The project is expected to improve access between the housing development and the playing field while reducing the mud, standing water and inconvenience residents faced during rainy conditions.
