Chief Fisheries Officer Calls for Greater Safety Among Fishers

Acting Chief Fisheries Officer Wynnona Joseph is encouraging fishers across Dominica to make safety their highest priority as the Atlantic hurricane season continues, reminding them that careful preparation and responsible decision-making can help prevent accidents at sea.

Joseph delivered the appeal during the recent ceremony in Scotts Head where eight replacement fishing vessels were handed over to beneficiaries, completing the government’s post-Hurricane Maria boat replacement programme. While acknowledging the importance of supporting the fishing industry, she emphasized that protecting lives must remain the sector’s foremost concern.

The sea provides our livelihood, but it also demands our respect,” Joseph said as she urged fishers to adopt a stronger culture of safety before leaving port.

She encouraged vessel owners to carry out regular maintenance on their boats, ensure all required safety equipment is onboard and in good working condition, monitor weather forecasts before every trip, and comply fully with fisheries regulations.

Joseph also called on fishers to establish clear safety procedures for their crews and families, stressing that every fishing expedition should begin with proper planning and end with everyone returning home safely.

Returning home safely after every fishing trip must always remain our highest priority,” she said.

The Acting Chief Fisheries Officer said the Fisheries Division will continue supporting fishing villages through training programmes, technical assistance, improved infrastructure, fisheries management initiatives and other development opportunities designed to strengthen the sector.

She added that these investments are intended not only to improve productivity but also to build a more resilient and sustainable fisheries industry capable of supporting present and future generations.

Joseph’s remarks come as weather forecasters continue monitoring tropical activity across the Atlantic and Caribbean, with authorities encouraging all marine users to remain vigilant throughout the hurricane season. She said a strong culture of preparedness, combined with safe operating practices, will help reduce risks while allowing fishers to continue contributing to Dominica’s food security and economic development.
