The Government has announced plans to train 20 air traffic controllers in 2026, as preparations continue for the operational phase of the international airport project and the wider employment opportunities it is expected to generate.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the airport’s completion is projected to create more than 200 permanent jobs, spanning aviation services, security, logistics, ground handling, administration, and maintenance. He described the training programme for air traffic controllers as a critical component of ensuring safe and efficient airport operations. He urged Dominicans to begin preparing themselves by acquiring relevant skills and certifications, noting that the airport will require a broad range of technical and support services beyond flight operations.
The Prime Minister encouraged young people and professionals to pursue training in aviation-related fields, customer service, engineering, information technology, and business services.
According to Skerrit, early preparation will allow Dominicans to compete effectively for available positions and reduce reliance on external labour when the airport becomes fully operational. He added that the government is working with training institutions and partners to align programmes with the airport’s staffing needs.
The international airport is expected to play a major role in expanding air access, boosting tourism, and supporting long-term economic growth. Government officials say workforce readiness remains a priority as construction advances and operational planning intensifies.
