Gouté Dominik
Goûté Domnik (also stylized as Goûté Dominik) is the official national restaurant week of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Conceived and organized by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), the multi-day culinary festival is held annually to showcase the island’s unique gastronomy, stimulate domestic and international tourism, and support local agricultural value chains.
Operating under the promotional theme “Where Flavor Meets Nature,” the event provides a structured platform for certified domestic food establishments, ranging from high-end eco-resort restaurants to local Creole bistros, to offer specially curated, fixed-price menus that highlight authentic Dominican ingredients.
History and Institutional Objectives
The initiative was introduced to establish Dominica as a leading sustainable culinary destination in the Eastern Caribbean.
Launch and Evolution
The inaugural edition of Goûté Domnik took place from August 12 to 25, 2024, successfully introducing the restaurant week concept to the local population and regional travelers. To align with the island’s high-traffic summer travel season and maximize visitor turnout, subsequent iterations were integrated into the state’s broader “Summer the Nature Island Way” promotional campaign. For example, the 2026 festival was scheduled from July 19 to 26, 2026.
Core Policy Goals
The Discover Dominica Authority administers the program to achieve several key socio-economic milestones:
- Promoting Culinary Tourism: Attracting regional food enthusiasts, particularly from neighboring French departments (Guadeloupe and Martinique) and the wider CARICOM region.
- Supporting Local Agribusinesses: Partnering participating chefs directly with local farmers and fishers, keeping food miles low and supporting the domestic economy.
- Sustaining Food Heritage: Encouraging the preservation and creative adaptation of traditional Dominican cooking techniques and ingredients, such as dasheen, plantains, fresh seafood, local herbs, and seasonal fruits.
Event Structure and Standardized Pricing
To ensure accessibility for diverse dining demographics, the Discover Dominica Authority enforces a standardized, tiered pricing framework. Participating restaurants are required to fall into one of four pricing categories, with all advertised rates inclusive of domestic taxes:
| Menu Tier | Price (XCD) | Target Dining Experience |
| Eat Local / Island Bite | Under $60.00 | Casual street food, local lunches, and quick bites. |
| Creole Delight / Scrumptious | $60.00 – $120.00 | Standard two-course or three-course casual dining lunches and dinners. |
| Delectable | $120.00 | Premium dining features, focusing on creative fusions of local and international styles. |
| Taste of Nature / Divine | $200.00 | High-end, multi-course tasting menus at luxury eco-resorts and boutique hotels. |
To participate, food establishments must hold active certification from the Environmental Health Unit, ensuring strict adherence to national food safety and hygiene protocols.
Key Satellite Activities and Attractions
Goûté Domnik extends beyond standard restaurant dining, featuring interactive community events designed to celebrate local food culture:
The Friendly One Pot Competition
This event showcases traditional cooking styles, culinary creativity, and the innovative use of local ingredients. Community groups, local enthusiasts, and professional chefs cook authentic Dominican dishes over open flames in large “one-pot” communal vessels, fostering cultural pride and visitor interaction.
Farmer’s Marketplace
Organized on the final weekend of the festival, this open-air market connects local agricultural producers directly with the public. It provides a dedicated venue for purchasing fresh organic produce, artisanal preserves, spices, and homemade treats.
