Central Forest Reserve
Central Forest Reserve is Dominica’s oldest protected rainforest, established in 1952. Spanning three parishes, Saint David Parish, Saint Paul Parish, and Saint Joseph Parish, this expansive reserve reflects the island’s dedication to safeguarding natural heritage and protecting its unique ecosystems. The reserve is bordered by the Dr. Nicholas Liverpool Highway to the north, Imperial Road to the west, and Castle Bruce Road to the south, where it connects with the East Coast Road at Castle Bruce, running along Dominica’s Northeast Coast.
Exploring Dominica’s Central Forest Reserve
This vast reserve encompasses significant portions of Pont Cassé and is home to notable mountains, including Morne Neg Marron (684 m), Morne Fraser (693 m), and Morne La Source. These peaks contribute to the diverse topography of the reserve, which is the source of many of Dominica’s important rivers. These rivers include: River Dleau Manioc, Belle Fille River, Fond Figues River, Maclauchlin River, Richmond River, and Madjini River. Additionally, within the Kalinago Territory, which also forms part of the reserve, rivers such as the Mahaut River, Salybia River, and Crayfish River further enrich the area’s biodiversity, and end in Bataka, where Segment #6 of the Waitukubuli National Trail crosses the Pagua River to join Segment #7 in Hatton Garden.
The Central Forest Reserve is a vital part of Dominica’s ecosystem. It plays a crucial role in the island’s water cycle and supports many flora and fauna.
