Two of the five bridges being constructed under the Loubiere to Grand Bay Road and Bridge Rehabilitation Project have been completed, while the remaining three have reached more than 90 percent completion.
Parliamentary Representative for the Petite Savanne Constituency, Jullan Defoe, provided the update as work continued along the critical southern transport corridor.
The project covers approximately 10.4 kilometres and has been divided into three segments: Loubiere to Bellevue Chopin, Bellevue Chopin to Pichelin, and Pichelin to the junction at Geneva in Grand Bay. Works include road widening and resurfacing, slope stabilisation, improved drainage, and the construction or replacement of bridges and culverts.
Defoe said the section between Loubiere and Pichelin was almost 90 percent complete. He also confirmed that the Micham Bridge was finished and had been opened to vehicular traffic.
“As we speak now, the third phase, which is Loubiere to Pichelin, is almost 90 percent complete. And as you would have seen, that the Micham Bridge, the famous Micham Bridge, is operational. Vehicles are now traversing on the Micham Bridge, so Micham Bridge is complete,” Defoe said.
He added that two bridges were now complete, while each of the remaining three had advanced beyond 90 percent.
Defoe acknowledged that the construction has caused temporary difficulties for residents, pedestrians and motorists, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when loose material can wash into drains. He said the affected drains were being cleared by those responsible for implementing the project.
The Petite Savanne MP thanked residents, bus drivers and other motorists for their patience and cooperation while the work continues. He said traffic had generally moved smoothly despite the absence of alternative routes along sections of the project.
Defoe expressed hope that the rehabilitation would be completed on schedule and provide a safer road for residents and motorists travelling between Roseau and communities in the south.
