Government Delivers 10 Fishing Boats to Layou Fishermen

Ten fishermen in Layou have received newly constructed fishing boats from the Government of Dominica as part of ongoing efforts to restore livelihoods affected by Hurricane Maria.
The handover was carried out through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, with government officials describing the initiative as a fulfillment of commitments made to fishermen who lost vessels and equipment during the 2017 hurricane.
Minister of State with responsibility for Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Jullan Defoe, said the investment in the boats exceeds half a million dollars and forms part of broader plans to strengthen resilience within the fisheries sector.
According to the minister, the vessels were designed using improved safety and resilience features intended to better protect fishermen operating at sea. “If they were to sink, there would still be a float and the fishers would have an opportunity to stay alive,” he explained while pointing to built-in air pocket systems and upgraded construction methods.
Defoe also highlighted the role of local boat builders in constructing the vessels, saying the project combined traditional craftsmanship with newer building techniques.
Officials noted that fishing remains one of the island’s more expensive industries because of rising fuel costs, engines, nets, maintenance expenses, and boat construction materials.
The minister said some fishing operations may involve investments exceeding EC$100,000 when equipment and assets are fully considered.
The government has indicated that an additional distribution exercise is expected to take place in Soufrière and Scotts Head, where the final set of approved boats under the programme will be handed over to fishermen in those communities. The Ministry says the programme forms part of wider efforts to improve food security, support coastal communities, and strengthen long-term resilience within Dominica’s fisheries sector.
