DEXIA Purchases More Than 74,000 Pounds of Fish from Local Fishers

The Government of Dominica is continuing efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector through expanded marketing, processing and export opportunities, with the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA) playing an increasingly prominent role in the industry.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy Roland Royer says the objective is to allow fishers to focus more on harvesting while benefiting from improved systems for purchasing, distribution and market access. According to the minister, DEXIA is now managing the fisheries facility in Roseau and has become a key buyer of locally caught fish.

Royer revealed that DEXIA has already purchased more than 74,000 pounds of fish from local fishers, creating a more structured market for seafood products and helping to strengthen the fisheries value chain. He argued that many fishers often attempt to manage every stage of the business process, from catching fish to marketing and exporting, which can reduce efficiency and limit growth opportunities.

The minister said government wants to create a system where fishers can concentrate on production while specialized agencies and facilities assist with processing, marketing and distribution.

Efforts are also underway to expand export opportunities for Dominican seafood products. Royer disclosed that trial shipments have already been sent to markets in Canada and New York, where the products reportedly received positive reviews because of their freshness and rapid delivery times. Some shipments reached supermarkets and restaurants within three days of being caught, allowing them to command premium prices.

Despite this progress, the minister noted that access to larger international markets such as the United Kingdom depends on obtaining the necessary certifications for processing facilities. He said DEXIA and the Fisheries Division are working toward meeting international food safety and regulatory requirements needed to support expanded exports.

Government officials believe these initiatives will help increase earnings for fishers, strengthen food production and create new economic opportunities within the blue economy. As export capacity grows and marketing systems improve, the fisheries sector is expected to play an increasingly important role in national economic development and foreign exchange generation.
