The Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) has highlighted the growing importance of wellness tourism as a contributor to economic activity, entrepreneurship and community development across the island.
The discussion formed part of the 2026 Tourism Awareness Programme and brought together tourism officials, wellness practitioners and industry stakeholders to examine how health and experience-based travel is shaping new opportunities for residents and businesses. Held under the theme “Wellness by Nature,” the event explored the ways in which Dominica’s natural environment continues to position the country as a distinctive destination within the global wellness tourism market.
According to the DDA, wellness tourism extends well beyond traditional spa experiences. Organizers pointed to Dominica’s rivers, waterfalls, hot springs, hiking trails, organic farming, herbal traditions and natural landscapes as assets that support both visitor experiences and local livelihoods.
Product Promotions Manager at the DDA, Odile John-Baptiste, emphasised that wellness tourism is closely connected to everyday life in Dominica and offers benefits that can reach communities throughout the island. She noted that many of the experiences sought by wellness travellers are rooted in resources and traditions already valued by local residents.
The panel featured representatives from several sectors, including tourism, holistic wellness, hospitality and herbal product development. Discussions focused on how wellness tourism can stimulate small business creation, encourage community participation and generate economic opportunities while preserving the island’s natural and cultural assets.
Participants also examined emerging trends in the international tourism market, where travelers are increasingly seeking destinations that offer experiences centered on health, nature, personal wellbeing and sustainable living.
Officials say Dominica’s reputation as the “Nature Island” provides a strong foundation for continued growth in the wellness tourism sector. By combining natural attractions with local expertise, cultural traditions and community-based experiences, stakeholders believe the industry can contribute to broader economic development while reinforcing the country’s position within a rapidly expanding global tourism niche.
