The Government has publicly endorsed the launch of the Small Business Unit at the National Bank of Dominica, describing it as an important step toward boosting entrepreneurship and enterprise expansion across the island.
The Small Business Unit (SBU), which opened its doors at the bank’s Old Street Branch, was launched on the 23rd January 2026 with a focus on providing tailored financial solutions, advisory support, and mentorship to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, a segment of the economy seen as a key driver of sustainable growth.
Officials said the SBU’s services include one-on-one advisory support, customised financing options, training and development opportunities, and on-site business visits, all delivered through a dedicated team of relationship managers.
The Government’s support was conveyed by Senator Philip Rolle, Coordinator of the Dominica Youth Business Trust, who said the new unit “has opened new opportunities” for youth and other entrepreneurs to develop and expand their businesses. He told national media that the initiative provides a “major opportunity” for local enterprises to grow and thrive in an evolving Dominican economy.
Government representatives have also stressed the broader economic context in which the Small Business Unit is being launched. With major infrastructure development and the expansion of sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and services, authorities say there is an increasing need for enterprise readiness and access to appropriate capital. The SBU is seen as complementary to other national programmes that support small business development, including training and formalisation initiatives.
Annette Severin-Lestrade, Managing Director of the National Bank of Dominica, said the establishment of the Small Business Unit represents “a new day for small businesses in Dominica,” noting that the bank aims to be a long-term partner in the growth journeys of local entrepreneurs. Her comments at the launch highlighted the importance of accessible credit and advisory services in helping businesses overcome typical startup and expansion barriers.
Private sector groups also welcomed the development. Brenton Hilaire, President of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce, described the timing of the new unit as appropriate and beneficial for the business community, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to leverage emerging economic opportunities.
Officials said the SBU is designed not only to facilitate lending but to encourage business formalisation, financial literacy, and sustainable operations, helping enterprises grow responsibly and compete more effectively in local and regional markets.
As the initiative gets underway, the Government and National Bank said they will continue to engage with business owners and stakeholders to ensure the Small Business Unit meets practical needs and contributes meaningfully to Dominica’s economic diversification and employment creation.
