Valencia Webb Highlights Growth in Girl Guiding Across Dominica

The Dominica Girl Guides Association (DGGA) has reported a significant increase in membership over the past year, reflecting growing interest in the organization’s youth development programmes and renewed enthusiasm for the guiding movement across the island.
Chief Commissioner Valencia Webb announced the development during the association’s recent Annual General Meeting, where she highlighted a year marked by growth, leadership development, community service and increased participation by young girls and women.
“The last year has been one of growth, learning, service, development, leadership, achievement and a renewed enthusiasm for the association,” Webb stated.
According to Webb, the increase in membership demonstrates the continued relevance of the guiding movement and the confidence that parents and guardians continue to place in the organization and its programmes.
She noted that more girls and young women have joined guiding units in communities throughout Dominica, allowing the association to positively influence an even greater number of young people.
Throughout the past year, members participated in a wide range of activities aimed at building leadership skills, promoting teamwork and encouraging personal growth. These activities included environmental initiatives, educational workshops, community outreach programmes and service projects.
Webb explained that these programmes are designed to help members develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility while preparing them to become active and engaged citizens.
“One of our greatest accomplishments was the expansion of membership within several units, enabling us to reach and positively influence more young people than ever before,” she said.
The Annual General Meeting was held under the theme “Honoring Our Roots, Proud Past, Progressive Future,” which organizers said reflects the association’s commitment to preserving the values and traditions of guiding while embracing new opportunities for growth and development.
Featured speaker Brendalyn Bazil encouraged members to view challenges as opportunities for growth and self-improvement. Drawing parallels between childhood development and personal leadership, she reminded participants that perseverance is essential to success.
The Dominica Girl Guides Association has long played an important role in youth development on the island, providing girls and young women with opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in community service and build lifelong friendships through the international guiding movement.
Association officials say they remain committed to expanding programmes and strengthening units across Dominica as they continue to empower young women and girls through guiding.
