Leader of the United Workers’ Party, Dr. Thompson Fontaine, has raised fresh concerns over Dominica’s national debt, warning that current levels pose a growing burden on the country’s economy and its citizens.
Speaking during a recent programme, Fontaine stated that Dominica’s debt has reached approximately $2.2 billion, now exceeding the country’s gross domestic product, which he placed at around $2.1 billion. He argued that this imbalance highlights structural weaknesses in the economy and raises questions about long-term sustainability.
Fontaine explained that while the government continues to service its obligations, the scale of the debt remains significant. He noted that roughly $100 million is paid annually in repayments, diverting a substantial portion of national revenue from other priorities.
“So we pay about $100 million… about 30 cents on every dollar that the country makes in taxes,” he said, comparing the situation to servicing a large mortgage where only a portion is repaid each year.
Beyond the numbers, Fontaine questioned whether the country’s economic growth is benefiting the wider population. He argued that current growth patterns are not broad-based, pointing to major projects such as the international airport development in Wesley.
According to Fontaine, despite the scale of investment in such projects, surrounding communities are not experiencing the level of economic uplift that would typically be expected. “You would have a thriving community in Wesley… but the people there are struggling,” he stated, suggesting that the benefits of large-scale investments are not reaching ordinary citizens.
He also raised concerns about the use of Citizenship by Investment funds, arguing that these resources should translate more directly into tangible improvements in livelihoods.
Fontaine’s comments add to ongoing national discussions about economic management, debt sustainability, and the real impact of development projects on everyday life in Dominica.
