When Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit took the stage in Dublanc on June 1, 2025, his message was grounded not in spectacle but in legacy. “This is a historic event. This is a significant milestone in the political history of Dominica. For any political party to survive 70 years is a remarkable achievement,” he told the sea of red-clad supporters.

The 70th Anniversary of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) was more than just a celebration, it was, in Skerrit’s words, “a very solemn occasion,” and one that reaffirmed both the party’s resilience and its deep roots in the country’s democratic journey.

Reaffirming the Core Mission

Skerrit used the platform to recall the values and sacrifices that brought Labour to power, and kept it there. “We must never forget the struggles,” he said, naming Edward Oliver LeBlancPierre CharlesRoosevelt Douglas, and Michael Douglas among those who paved the way. But he made clear the party’s mission is still evolving.

The Prime Minister emphasized national healing and unity: “Labour is not the enemy. We have no enemies in this country. We may have people who do not agree with us politically, but they’re not enemies.

An Open Door Policy, Even for Former Opponents

In one of the more striking moments, Skerrit extended public invitations to figures from the opposition United Workers’ Party (UWP). “Ronald -Ron- Green can come join us in Labour. Edison James, you’re welcome. Hector John, you’re welcome,” he said, naming former UWP leaders directly. “We have space for you in Labour.

This was not a throwaway line, it was a strategic gesture. By openly inviting former rivals, Skerrit was positioning the DLP not as one party among many, but as the only national movement capable of unity and continuity.

Achievements in Health and Housing

Skerrit devoted sections of his speech to specific achievements, particularly in healthcare and housing. “We have so far completed and opened three polyclinics in the country… and a number of health and wellness centres,” he said, highlighting the new facility in Marigot as “one of the most modern hospitals in the Eastern Caribbean.”

He connected these gains to past crises: “When Hurricane Maria struck Dominica… I gave the commitment to the country that I will provide every single home that was destroyed with a new home.” And again, he reiterated that promise continues to be delivered. “Not even the most developed countries in the world would have given that commitment,” he noted.

Cost of Living and Immediate Priorities

Addressing the cost of living directly, Skerrit told the crowd: “We’re going to do something to bring down the cost of living in Dominica… We’re going to start this consultation this week with the various stakeholders in the country.

This recognition of public concern, paired with a promise of swift engagement, reflected the balancing act of a leader aware of both his government’s strengths and the pressures Dominicans face.

Labour Will Not Fade, It Will Lead

With visible passion, Skerrit declared, “You name it,we’re in it,” referencing housing, education, international diplomacy, and climate leadership. He reminded supporters that his government had secured funding and respect from across the globe. “I am doing my best to represent this country in every single forum… and the respect is clear,” he said.

But the line that drew the strongest response, and perhaps defined the night, came near the end: “I will lead this country until Jesus Christ comes.

That statement was not a boast, but a signal. A message to his supporters that their leader is not preparing to step back, he is gearing up for what’s next.

The Voice of a Movement, Not Just a Party

The rally in Dublanc wasn’t just about the past 70 years. It was about Skerrit making it clear that the DLP remains the only political force with the vision, reach, and credibility to govern Dominica.

He didn’t rely on grand gestures. He relied on results, memory, and faith. And to those still unsure of where Dominica is headed, he made the answer unmistakably clear:

Labour is not finished. Labour is not fading.

As he told the crowd, “We shall win every single seat in Dominica, and more.
