Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that government is actively examining the establishment of a dedicated agro-processing facility to support beekeepers and pepper sauce producers across Dominica.
The Prime Minister announced the move during a meeting with producers earlier this week, acknowledging the infrastructure challenges facing small-scale agro-processors.
“One of the key challenges facing agro-processors is access to appropriate infrastructure. Processing, bottling, storage, quality testing, and compliance with standards all require facilities that many small producers like you cannot reasonably develop on your own,” he stated.
Skerrit indicated that government is prepared to intervene directly to remove those barriers. “In response to this, I wish to inform you this evening that government is actively examining the establishment of a dedicated agro-processing facility,” he said.
Addressing beekeepers specifically, the Prime Minister added, “What we’re saying tonight to you is that for the beekeepers of Dominica, we are prepared to build and equip a modern facility to facilitate your production, bottling, and packaging of honey in Dominica.”
He extended the same commitment to pepper sauce producers. “And we also say the same thing to the pepper sauce producers, that we would like to build a national facility for your production, and we’re prepared to put the money into this at no cost to you, the producers.”
The Prime Minister explained that details on how the facility would operate and benefit producers would be discussed further as consultations continue. He suggested that the initiative could strengthen value-added production, improve product standards, and enhance market access for local goods.
If implemented, the proposed agro-processing facility would represent a significant step toward expanding Dominica’s agro-industrial capacity and providing structured support to small and medium-sized producers nationwide.
