Parliament Hears Renewed Call for Green Energy Acceleration
The Dominican government has renewed its full backing for the national transition to renewable energy, with a strong focus on geothermal and solar power systems. The commitment was outlined in the first meeting of the Third Session of the Eleventh Parliament on July 28, 2025.
The Roseau Valley geothermal development project remains central to this effort, with construction continuing and the goal of supplying a significant share of the island’s electricity needs. The President emphasised that geothermal energy would reduce Dominica’s dependence on imported fuel, lower household and business costs, and contribute to energy security.
In parallel, solar energy is being scaled up. Photovoltaic systems are being installed across schools, health centres, and other public infrastructure. These solar arrays aim to reduce government energy bills and serve as examples of clean energy in action.
Burton also signalled legislative support for private sector involvement. New policies are expected to introduce tax incentives and financing tools to encourage local businesses to invest in renewable energy and adopt more efficient technologies.
The overall objective, according to the President, is to position Dominica as a resilient island that uses its natural resources to secure a cleaner, more stable energy future. She noted that energy independence was no longer aspirational, but an urgent matter tied to national development.
With both infrastructure and legislation advancing, Dominica’s clean energy transition is moving from planning into delivery. The coming months are expected to see new construction milestones and the introduction of regulatory measures that will shape the island’s energy landscape for decades to come.
