The Trafalgar, Shawford, and Fond Canie communities welcomed new leadership as the Trafalgar / Shawford / Fond Canie Village Council held its official swearing-in ceremony. The event, attended by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister for Finance Dr. Irvin McIntyre, and other government officials, emphasised the council’s role in advancing community development, sustainability, and youth leadership.
Newly elected chairman Shadina Saint Jean vowed to focus on education, infrastructure, waste management, and economic opportunities for residents. She pledged to work closely with the government and community stakeholders to deliver meaningful improvements.
Outgoing chairman Clifford Morancie, whose speech was read by Abra-Lee Jones Harriette, highlighted achievements during his tenure. These included the successful scholarship program, upgrades to public infrastructure such as bus stops and drainage systems, and more substantial support for youth and agriculture initiatives. He urged residents to remain engaged in governance and continue supporting the council’s efforts.
Prime Minister Skerrit reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with village councils across Dominica, stressing the importance of community-driven leadership. He encouraged residents to actively participate in development efforts and highlighted the need for climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and improved health practices.
Minister McIntyre echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the importance of environmental sustainability. He urged residents to embrace healthier lifestyles and continue making their communities resilient against climate change impacts.
A significant highlight of the event was the recognition of Trafalgar’s Junior Council, a model initiative encouraging youth participation in governance. Officials noted the importance of empowering younger generations to take leadership roles in shaping Dominica’s future.
The new council’s inauguration signals a renewed effort toward inclusive, community-focused leadership, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, accountability, and sustainable growth. Residents now look forward to how the council will translate these pledges into tangible results.
