Juliette Shillingford Confirmed as UWP Roseau Central Candidate

Former Chief Physical Planner Juliette Shillingford has been officially confirmed as the United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Roseau Central constituency for the next general election, becoming the latest addition to the party’s slate of election candidates.

Shillingford was formally introduced at a UWP press conference, where party officials presented her as part of their ongoing effort to prepare for future electoral contests. Her selection brings extensive experience in urban planning, development policy and land-use management to the political arena.

Addressing supporters and members of the media, Shillingford said she was entering the political field not simply as a professional planner, but as a citizen concerned about the future direction of Roseau and the opportunities available to its residents.

For many years I served as Chief Planner, but I stand here not so much as a planner that understands the workings of a city. I stand before you as an ordinary citizen,” she stated.

She used the occasion to outline her vision for the capital city, emphasizing economic activity, environmental improvement and community development. Shillingford argued that Roseau possesses untapped assets that could contribute significantly to growth if properly developed and managed.

Among the opportunities she identified were the Roseau River, the city’s cultural and architectural heritage, local businesses and the potential of young entrepreneurs. She said these resources should be viewed as valuable development assets that can contribute to a more vibrant and sustainable urban environment.

Shillingford also spoke about the need for cleaner public spaces, safer communities and stronger support for business development within the city. She described a future Roseau that is more welcoming to residents, investors and visitors while creating improved opportunities for families and entrepreneurs.

I see a cleaner city. I see a safer city. I see a greener city. I see a healthier city. A more vibrant city. A city that works,” she said while presenting her vision for the constituency.

Her confirmation comes as political parties continue selecting candidates and organizing their campaigns ahead of future elections. The UWP has recently intensified its candidate rollout process, introducing several individuals across constituencies as part of its broader electoral strategy.
