Secondary schools across Dominica are receiving emergency preparedness supplies through a government initiative aimed at improving safety measures within the education system ahead of the 2026 hurricane season.
The Ministry of Education has begun distributing more than 200 first aid kits and 150 fire extinguishers to government, government-assisted, and private schools across the island.
The handover exercise involved Careen Prevost, who serves as Cabinet Secretary, Robert Guiste, serving as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, school officials, teachers, and students.
Prevost said the distribution forms part of commitments made under agreements involving the Dominica Association of Teachers and the Public Service Union to strengthen safety protocols within schools. Government officials say the supplies are intended to help schools respond more effectively to emergencies, including fires, accidents, and medical incidents.
The initiative also comes as schools continue reviewing emergency procedures and readiness plans for the Atlantic hurricane season.
A student representative from the Convent High School welcomed the donations. “On behalf of the Convent High School and the students and the staff, we are very grateful,” the student stated during the ceremony.
Officials confirmed that distribution will continue around the island over the coming weeks as schools receive the equipment and related safety materials.
The Ministry of Education says the programme is part of wider efforts to improve disaster preparedness standards and strengthen support systems within educational institutions nationwide.
