Progress on Dominica’s international airport project continued this week, with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit outlining the latest developments and addressing public concerns about excavation activity in the Bois Diable area. During a media interview, he described construction as “progressing satisfactorily,” noting that crews are advancing work on key facilities, including the terminal building and supporting infrastructure.
According to the Prime Minister, a substantial quantity of aggregate and sand is required at this stage of the project, and the stone selected must meet strict density specifications suitable for an international-standard runway. He acknowledged that the scale of earthworks has prompted questions from nearby communities but emphasised that the government is treating these concerns seriously.
He stated that while some of the environmental claims circulating publicly do not align with the available scientific assessments, the administration intends to maintain open engagement with residents, environmental groups, and other stakeholders.
The Prime Minister said he will personally lead an on-site visit next week to give representative groups an opportunity to view the operations, speak with project officials and offer recommendations on mitigation measures.
He added that any major construction project produces environmental impacts, but the government’s responsibility is to ensure these are properly managed. He noted that Dominica cannot choose development at the expense of environmental protection, nor can it halt essential national projects out of fear, stressing that both objectives must be balanced. The Prime Minister also cautioned against efforts to use environmental concerns to stop the project entirely, saying history would judge such attempts harshly. However, he distinguished this from genuine concerns expressed by residents who value the surrounding natural environment and wish to see best practices upheld during construction.
He reiterated that the administration remains committed to building the international airport while applying appropriate safeguards. The facility, once completed, is expected to significantly shift Dominica’s long-term economic prospects by improving global access, increasing visitor arrivals, and strengthening trade and service connectivity.
