Dominica Responds to Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa Need

The government of Dominica has officially expressed solidarity with the people and government of Jamaica following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that made landfall on October 28, 2025. A message posted on social media by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit affirmed that Dominica stands in full support of Jamaica as it faces one of its most significant natural disasters events.

While the exact details of material or financial assistance by Dominica have not yet been publicly quantified, regional coverage indicates that several Caribbean nations are mobilising aid and relief for Jamaica.

Hurricane Melissa caused widespread destruction in Jamaica, with strong winds, heavy rainfall, flooding and large-scale infrastructure damage reported. In its statement, the regional health agency, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), described the event as both a public health and humanitarian crisis, emphasising the need for relief efforts and regional cooperation.

Dominica’s message is significant given the island’s own vulnerability to extreme weather events in recent years. The outreach to Jamaica signals a commitment to regional solidarity and disaster resilience. Officials in Dominica are expected to follow up with formal disaster-relief coordination in collaboration with Caribbean regional agencies such as the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

In the coming days, Dominica may announce its specific support plan, which could include emergency supplies, logistical assistance, or the deployment of personnel in coordination with Jamaica’s national relief operations. The gesture underscores the importance of collective action across the Caribbean in the face of climate-related threats.
