Attorney General Confirms Legal Profession Bill to Reach Parliament in Early 2026

The Government is preparing to bring a Legal Profession Bill before Parliament in the first quarter of 2026, a move aimed at strengthening oversight, discipline, and professional standards across Dominica’s legal sector.

Attorney General Levi Peter said the legislation will establish a modern regulatory structure for attorneys, including clearer rules for licensing, ethical conduct, and disciplinary action. The bill is expected to introduce mechanisms to protect clients, improve accountability, and align local practice with regional and international norms.

Officials indicated that the new framework will address complaint handling, professional misconduct, and continuing education, and will also set out transparent procedures for sanctions when breaches occur. The reforms are designed to boost public confidence in legal services and ensure that practitioners meet consistent standards of competence and integrity.

The measure also aligns with wider justice sector reforms currently underway, including updates to criminal procedure and the expansion of court capacity. Government sources said the Legal Profession Bill will complement these efforts by ensuring that the legal community itself operates under clear, enforceable rules.

Once tabled, the bill will be debated in Parliament, with stakeholders from the Bar and civil society expected to review its provisions. The Attorney General’s chambers said consultations held so far have helped shape a draft that balances professional independence with strong public protection.
