Job Description
The Board of Management of the Wesley High School invites applications for the position of Principal.
Under the supervision of the Board of Management and in full compliance with the requirements of the Education Act and the related Regulations., the principal maintains a school environ that is conducive to learning and provides leadership and administration which will motivate the staff to strive for superior performance so as to secure the best possible opportunities for student growth and development, both educationally and personally.
Responsibility
- Furnish such returns as may be prescribed by the Minister of Education and the
- Ensure the observance of the provisions of the Education Act and Regulations
- Promote satisfactory relationships with parents’ and the community(s) served by the
- Develop and implement procedures for parental and community involvement in the school and promote co-operation between the school and the community(s) it serves
- Maintain order and discipline in the school, on the school grounds and during activities sponsored or approved by the
- Supervise and direct teachers and other staff assigned or rendering services to the school including volunteers;
- Maintain any records and complete any returns and forms required by the Board and those that are pursuant to the Education Act and
- Ensure the proper maintenance and care of school property;
- Requisition necessary materials , supplies and equipment for the school and arrange for distribution of them;
- Attend meetings of the Board, the Parent Teachers Association or school committees.
- Report promptly to the Manager, Chief Education Officer, the Chief Medical Officer and other appropriate health personnel an apparent outbreak of any contagious or infectious disease in the school, any unsanitary condition in the school building or surroundings and any other dangerous or unsafe condition in the school;
- Report to the Chief Education Officer and to the proper government official responsible for student welfare that a student is in need of protection when there are reasonable grounds to believe that the student is in need of protection pursuant to any legislation enacted by parliament;
- Prepare the school’s operations and maintenance budget for review and approval by the Board;
- Be responsible for the preparation and implementation of the school plan.
- Keep parents informed of the progress and development of students;
- Ensure that instruction in the school is consistent with the courses of study prescribed pursuant to the Education Act and Regulations;
- Include in the activities of the school, cultural heritage traditions and practices;
- Formulate with the assistance of the staff the overall aims and objectives of the school and policies for their implementation.
- Deploy and manage all teaching and non-teaching staff of the school and allocate particular duties to them (including such duties of the principal as may be properly delegated to the deputy principal or other member of the staff ) in a manner consistent with their conditions of employment;
- Ensure that the duty of providing cover for absent teachers is shared equitably among all teachers in the school (including the principal), taking into account their teaching and other duties;
- Maintain relationships with organizations representing teachers and other persons on the staff of the school.
- Organize and implement the prescribed curriculum for the school having regard to: -
- the needs, experience, interests, aptitudes, and stage of development of the students.
- he measures available in the school and
- the duties of the principal under the Education Act and Regulations
- Keeping under review the work and organization of the school
- Evaluate the standards of teaching and learning in school and ensure that proper standards of professional performance are established and maintained.
- Maintain good order and discipline among the students and safeguard their health and safety both when they are authorized to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorized school activities elsewhere.
- Perform any other related duties which may be prescribed by Regulations under the Education Act or are required by the Board.
Experience and Qualifications
- A Master’s degree and certification in at least one of leadership, management, or education.
- At least five (5) years experience in educational leadership and three (3) complete years of instructional experience in the secondary sector.
- Excellent leadership skills
- Ability to represent and speak on behalf of the school
- Experience overseeing the delivery of the curricula for secondary school as offered by the Caribbean Examinations Council
- Capacity to lead, motivate and support staff and conduct school focused staff development
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Capacity to plan, implement and monitor innovative strategies for improved learning
- /academic performance of the students. Strong research and report preparation skills
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft suite or similar applications,
- General understanding of the curricula for secondary schools offered by the Caribbean Examinations Council and the legal framework that governs the operations of secondary schools in Dominica
- Ability to develop and maintain a school culture of academic excellence Good understanding of change management within schools as organizations.
- Ability to develop and monitor work plans, emergency plans and to innovate during emergencies.
- Good understanding of the infusion of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the school curricula and ability to keep abreast with developments in this area.
- Experiences and abilities in the collection, analysis, and utilization of student performance and school operational data in informing instructional and operational decisions
Benefits and Others
It should be noted that in the cases of public schools and assisted private schools the duties for the positions of teacher, deputy principal and principal are provided for in (S)134, (S)135 and (S) 136 of the Education Act (1997). This Act defines assisted private schools as; “any private school that is in receipt of assistance under this Act”.

The Wesley High School is a secondary school that came into being on 16th October 1926 – 82 years ago. Wesley High School is an all girl’s high school located in the capital city, Roseau. It occupies two buildings: the Hillsborough Street or Chateau building which houses the first and second forms and the Main building on Cross Street where forms three to five, and the office are located.
