Germplasm Technician

Job Description

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy is hiring an Assistant Laboratory Technician to support the Lab Technician in establishing and maintaining plant cultures. Responsibility

• Evaluating and modifying existing protocols and processes and development of new ones.
• Checking and improving quality control procedures in the all in-vivo germplasms.
• Establishing and maintaining procedures for minimizing and controlling hazards in. germplasm.
• Investigating and adapting appropriate techniques in germplasms.
• Development of new and more efficient protocols.
• Developing methods to improve the quality of germplasm.
• Executing experiments and preparing results for review.
• Supervise field technicians and monitor the daily register of attendance.
• Daily outlining of work and tasks.
• Establishment and maintenance of germplasms on station and outstation sites.
• Site selection for germplasms on station and out-station sites.
• Identify new sources of clean and new germplasm.
• Supervision of agronomic practices.
• Supervise the preparation of media.
• Supervision of Weaning and hardening operations.
• Interface between extension and farmers.
• Field evaluation of new germplasm.
• Log of distributed plants and data collection on tissue-cultured plants release to the farmer.

Experience and Qualifications

• BSc in Agronomy, Agriculture, Plant Biology, Horticulture, Agriculture or related field.
• At least four years experience working in the area of Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Biology or related field.
• In-vivo germplasm conservation and maintenance.
• Plant Genetics.
• Familiarity with germplasm maintenance Standards.
• Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures.
• Excellent Verbal and Written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage, lead and work with a team.
• Ability to develop and implement annual work program.
• Ability to be innovative.
• Good communication skills.
• Ability to think critically and independently.
• Ability to carry out several tasks simultaneously.

Physical Environment:

• The work is performed mainly in a laboratory environment.
• Will be exposed to natural environmental conditions.

Physical and Sensory Effort:

• Simple muscular movements, which involve the operation of machines and handling of field tools and equipment with some degree of skill, coordination, speed and accuracy, are required.
