Job Description
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy is hiring an Assistant Laboratory Technician to support the Lab Technician in establishing and maintaining plant cultures. This role requires a meticulous approach and a background in laboratory practices. Join us in promoting agricultural sustainability.
Responsibility
Maintaining standards; To carry out sterilization, initiation and sub-culturing of plants by:
- Surface sterilization of Explant.
- Sectioning cultures using sterilized equipment.
- Subculturing of plantlets.
- Assist in the preparation of media.
- Maintaining Cultures.
- Labelling all flasks (variety, date and personal initials) before transferring to shelves.
- Checking, recording and removing contaminated flasks from shelves daily.
- Sterilizing and washing all contaminated and used flasks daily.
- Sterilizing utensils as required.
- Preparing monthly records on work done and contaminations obtained (if any).
- Recording all work done in the record book.
- Cleaning workstation at the end of each workday.
- Perform any other related duties that may be assigned.
Experience and Qualifications
- Diploma in Chemistry, or at least 5 CXC subjects, including chemistry.
- Experience in laboratory procedures
- Computer literate (Word processing/Powerpoint/Excel etc)
- Plant biology and/or physiology
- Excellent Verbal and Written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to be innovative and motivated
- Good communication skills
- Ability to think critically and independently
- Ability to carry out several tasks simultaneously
Physical Environment:
- The work is performed mainly in a laboratory environment
- Requires working with equipment which generates heat
Physical and Sensory Effort:
- Simple muscular movements which involve the operation of machines with some degree of skill, coordination, speed and accuracy are required.
