Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation (WEF)

The Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation (WEF) was established in 1996 by Dominicans and friends of Dominica residing in London. Officially registered as a non-profit organisation under the Companies Act of the Commonwealth of Dominica in 1999, WEF’s mission is rooted in the island’s sustainable development. The organisation emphasises the integration of environmental conservation with community livelihoods, recognising that protecting nature must go hand-in-hand with improving economic opportunities for the people.
WEF operates with the belief that public support for conservation efforts can only be achieved when environmental strategies are inclusive of people’s basic needs. Its work aligns with efforts to develop resilient, eco-conscious communities and foster environmental awareness among Dominicans.
Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation (WEF) Key Projects
One of WEF’s most influential contributions to Dominica is the conceptualisation and advocacy for creating the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT). This long-distance hiking trail stretches from Scotts Head in the south to Cabrits National Park in the north, crossing varied ecosystems and over a dozen communities, including segments within the Kalinago Territory.
The WNT was implemented with the European Union, the Regional Council of Martinique, and the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica. It was developed to showcase the country’s biodiversity, promote eco-tourism, and create economic opportunities through community-based tourism. Today, the trail is a national symbol and a cornerstone of Dominica’s sustainable tourism and heritage preservation efforts.
Leadership, Advocacy, and Sustainable Vision
The Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation has also been a vocal advocate for environmental education, the promotion of organic agriculture, and the reduction of dependence on synthetic farming chemicals. Its campaigns encourage Dominicans to embrace organic farming as a viable and environmentally friendly path to economic self-reliance.
The Foundation is led by Bernard Wiltshire, former Attorney General of Dominica, who continues to play a central role in WEF’s vision and strategy. Under his leadership, the organisation remains committed to creating policy discussions and grassroots initiatives that prioritise ecological integrity alongside national development goals.
