Springfield

Springfield is a highland community located in the interior of Saint Paul Parish, Dominica, nestled between winding ridges and lush rainforest near the Check Hall River and Antrim Valley. Access is mainly via Imperial Road, which links the area to surrounding localities including Hope EstateCheck Hall Estate, and Chapara Estate. The community lies just below the prominent Morne Cola Anglais (710 m), offering panoramic views of the forested central highlands. Several natural waterways, including Ravine Ground and tributaries of the Check Hall River, enrich the area’s ecology.

Historical Significance and Research Institutions

At the center of Springfield is the historic Springfield Estate, one of Dominica’s oldest colonial properties, originally owned by the French Bellot family in the 18th century. In the 1930s, it was acquired by John Archbold, who later donated the estate in 1989 to Clemson University, leading to the establishment of the Archbold Tropical Research and Education Center. This facility, also referred to as the Springfield Centre for Environmental Protection, Research & Education (SCEPTRE), has played a major role in promoting environmental awareness, biodiversity studies, agroforestry, and sustainable development initiatives in Dominica.
