Roy Ashworth Marshall (Cricketer)

Roy Ashworth Marshall (born 1 April 1965, Saint Joseph Parish, Dominica) is a former Dominican cricketer who played domestic cricket primarily for the Windward Islands, with a brief stint for the Leeward Islands. He also represented Dominica in the Stanford 20/20 tournaments.

Career and Achievements

Marshall made his first-class debut for the Windward Islands in February 1985 during the 1984–85 Shell Shield season. Early in his career, he played intermittently, but later became a steady presence for the Windwards through much of the 1990s. In 1992, he played for the Leeward Islands, one of the few Dominican cricketers to represent more than one regional team.

As a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and useful lower-order batsman, Marshall recorded several standout performances:

  • He took his maiden five-wicket haul in the opening match of the 1992-93 Red Stripe Cup, with figures of 6/41 against Trinidad and Tobago.
  • His best bowling in an innings came in the 1995–96 season: 7/99 against Jamaica.
  • In that same season, he also claimed match figures of 10 for 176, finishing among the leading wicket takers in his team.

Marshall also made a mark with the bat: in February 1996, batting at number six, he scored his only first-class century,112 runs vs Trinidad and Tobago. In limited-over (List A) matches, he had more success as a batsman: his average was higher in List A games (≈ 27.07) compared to first-class (~18.29), with a top score of 77 not out in one of the Geddes Grant Shield matches.

He ended his first-class career with 144 wickets from 53 matches. His final appearances for Windward Islands came in the 2000–01 Red Stripe Bowl.

Legacy and Recognition

Marshall’s adaptability, playing for more than one regional side, sets him apart in Dominican cricket history. His all-round contributions and persistence over a long span earned him respect among peers. His performances, particularly his bowling feats and that century are frequently cited.
