Hurricane of 1928

The Hurricane of 1928, part of the larger Okeechobee Hurricane, passed near Dominica in September 1928 but caused minimal local impact. While the storm was one of the most devastating in the Caribbean, particularly catastrophic in Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, and southern Florida, it brushed Dominica without delivering the extreme winds or flooding experienced elsewhere. Reports from the time noted only light to moderate squalls, some heavy rainfall, and brief interruptions to inter-island shipping. Agricultural losses were negligible compared to other islands, and infrastructure damage was minimal. The storm’s trajectory and core intensity spared Dominica, leaving it largely unaffected during a hurricane that became infamous for its destruction in neighbouring territories.
