The Dominica Club, historically known as the Roseau Club, is one of the oldest social institutions in Dominica. Located in the capital city of Roseau, the club has served for over a century as a private venue for social interaction, recreation, and networking among the island’s professional, civic, and business leadership. While it originated during the colonial era as an exclusive gentlemen’s club, it is evolving into a modern social space that reflects the contemporary social fabric of Dominica while maintaining its heritage as a landmark of urban Roseau.

The roots of the Dominica Club trace back to the late 19th century, when it served as a hub for the plantocracy and administrative officials. Over the decades, particularly following Dominica’s transition toward independence in 1978, the club’s membership shifted to include a broader cross-section of Dominican society, including civil servants, educators, and entrepreneurs. The physical premises at the intersection of High Street and Bath Road in Roseau are recognised for their traditional architectural elements, standing as a testament to the city’s historical urban layout.

The club is going through a transformation through a partnership between the Government of Dominica and the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC), supported by funding from Panam Sports, the project aims to restore the facility to its former glory as a premier recreational venue. Initial phases of work have focused on clearing the site and demolishing dilapidated structures to make way for modernized facilities that will support diverse sports and entertainment activities.

The Vision for Urban Transformation

Under the broader “Dynamic Dominica” urban renewal plan, the refurbished club is envisioned as a “Youth Empowerment Village” or a high-tech recreational center. Plans for the site include not only the restoration of tennis and squash courts but also the introduction of facilities for pickleball and rollerskating. By integrating these modern amenities into the historic High Street corridor, the project seeks to provide the youth of Roseau with a safe, disciplined environment for skill-building and athletic competition.
